Irish holidaymakers are used to the fact that they have to negotiate the strange phenomenon of driving on the wrong side of the road when they usually go abroad since most of the near continent are right-hand drive, as is north and most of Central and South America. Like all things in life, it’s an experience that you get used to in time with the result that one easily switches mode when the need arises and you need to hire a car in a foreign country. What’s more surprising though is the fact that so many countries around the world still actually drive on the left — just like us. Any educated guesses as to how many? Five, perhaps? Ten?
Would you believe that there are actually 65 sovereign states located around the world that still drive on the left. Some like Japan, are reasonably well known. But there’s a whole slew of others in the Far East, the Caribbean, Africa, the South Pacific and Central and South America that might surprise — along with a few a little closer to home. Don’t look yet and see how many you can correctly guess? Of course the even more interesting story is how driving on the right or the left first occurred but that’s for another day!
